Hum aise bhi hain, hum hain waise bhi..
A dutch colleague who’s learning hindi (or trying to, not that we help him any) was asking today the hindi words for good afternoon, and good evening. Which got me thinking .. and thinking.. and thinking… Finally, I just told him, we use the english greetings.
Which got me to thinking.. does the lack of proper greeting equivalents in our language (and don’t try to offer me a ‘namaste’.. it doesn’t really count! ) mean that we, as a community, have evolved ‘rudely’; we don’t feel the need to greet each other; we, don’t have time for frivolities?
Whaddya think?

hmm… or maybe we don’t use them coz – traditionally – we seem to have all the time in the world to enquire abt detailed happenings in other ppls lives?
it could also be that there ARE regional language greetings and we (you and me) are unaware? in that case, i should just stay close to the ground and hope it swallows me!
p.s.: my ex-dutch colleague could SING roop suhaana lagta hai and order desi food.
without knowing the language, of course! but… he was a good display item when we went to desi restaurants!
I think we Indians are traditionally ‘abrupt’ … we throw aside greetings and dive right into conversation, you know, the ones where you try to ferret out info
It’s not so much a lack of regional greetings as it is simple a lack of conversation courtesy… in my opinion a lot of us seem to think that greetings are perfunctory and we’d rather dispense with them. Seems to work okay if you ask me, specially when you have angrejhee greetings to use when required.
Catty: We discussed this no? No earth-swallowing happening… it’s got enough burden to deal with already
@Raysh: What, you are now Sita-Maiyya??
@Dew.. : Your thought process works on similar lines…
I guess we desis are much more easy going…. i mean our good old “Kasa Kaay” works all the time…. or the more “yankeeized” WASSUP dude!!!
Catty and I? Yeah, hasn’t yet come to us completing sentences for each other but we say the same things at the same time
@Dew… : Ahem, well, I meant yours and mine, based on what I have posted and you have commented. But I am sure yours and Raysh’s does too ..:D
@Gautam: Welcome aboard! Happy reading.
Hahahahaha, my bad, my bad. Yes, you and I do think alike!
We dont have the time for such inanities…we just assume that everything is fine and get straight to the topic
